During the early 19th century, the discoveries of ancient archaeological finds influenced and introduced what is referred to as "Egyptian Revival Jewelry." The first Egyptian Revival period began around the 1820’s, inspired by the unearthing of ancient Egyptian ruins during that time. Images such as the scarab beetle, sphinxes, pharaohs, and hieroglyphics became popular motifs in fashion. Pieces were often crafted using a material known as Egyptian Paste or "faience", which is the oldest form of non-clay glazed ceramic and usually found in a range of blue and green colors.
In the 1920’s, there was another unearthing of treasures, making the trend popular once again. This scarab pendant is from that era—the third Egyptian Revival period. The scarab is a turqoise colored faience bead with brown and beige overtones in its recesses that delineate the shape of the beetle. There are hieroglyphics on the back of the scarab. At the bottom of the scarab is a round 14k gold ball that extends as a wire through the bead and forms a bale at the top.
The pendant measures 15/16“ from the bottom of the ball to the top of the bail. The scarab measures 1/2” x 3/8”. The bale measures 5 mm. The piece weighs 1.63 grams. The gold in unmarked and acid tests as 14k.

A love letter to a departed soul, this tender piece manifests as an envelope that folds over a pearl studded arrow and is sealed with a forget-me-not flower. Circa 1870, this early Victorian brooch is cast in 14k gold with a beautiful acid wash matte finish. The forget-me-not, a sentimental image often seen in mourning jewelry, consists of a chrysoberyl cat’s eye surrounded by six old cut diamonds bead set into its petals. The whimsical arrow is encrusted with eight pearls that look beautiful against the matte gold. On the back of the brooch, a portrait of a woman is held in an oval frame. She has braided hair, wears beautiful jewelry, and was clearly very loved by the brooch’s original owner.
The blue-grey cat’s eye has lovely chatoyancy that shimmers as it moves, making the piece even more magical. Chatoyancy is an optical phenomenon seen in certain stones, caused by light reflecting off of parallel needle-like elements within the stone, this is the cat’s eye effect. In addition, the chrysoberyl has a trait known as adularesence—a milky sheen or glowing light that seems to come from below the surface of the stone. The effect is caused by layers of orthoclase and albite that reflect and scatter light.

Circa the Victorian era, this beautifully polished piece of natural branch coral has an organic form and rich salmon color. The coral has a waxy patina and glows the way only Victorian coral can. It has a lovely elongated shape, capped with an 18k gold repeating leaf foliate motif. The growth patterns and natural details of the coral are visible, and because a piece of branch coral this size is hard to find, this is a rare piece.
Acquired on a recent trip to Amsterdam, we believe this piece to be Dutch made. It was originally a seal that had never had a cypher, or monogram, added to it. We thought it would make a perfect pendant, so we added an 18k gold bail with a matte finish to match the antique nature of the piece. The 18k gold cap, intended to be a cypher, is hand-carved with bright cut work—creating a pattern of leaves from tiny punched in cut marks. The gold has a great patina that we left in tact, as it is part of the antique charm of the piece.

A classic Art Nouveau design, this 15k rose gold necklace features stunning plique-à-jour, Rose Cut diamonds, and beautiful pearls. The centerpiece of the necklace is articulated, hinged in two places so that the flower and pearl drops dangle freely. Three plique-à-jour leaves are translucent—the loveliest matte soft green that fades into subtle purple highlights, clearly done by a master. Each cell of the leaf is filled with plique, with a white metal (platinum or white gold) creating contrast in the center of the leaf. Inside are a channel of bead set Rose Cut diamonds. A flower is suspended from the leaves, with multi-tones of peach to pale yellow that glow against the gold, with a prong-set diamond as its piston. The design work loops over, turning the bail into a scrolling foliate. The 15k gold appears rosy, as it has an incredible patina that shimmers with various hues of pink, gold, and green.
“Plique-à-jour” translates from French as “letting in daylight” and is a charming technique used in jewelry throughout the 20th century. To create this effect, colored, transparent enamel is suspended between gold backless cells to allow light to illuminate the piece with vibrant colors, similar to a stained glass window.
