Frontispiece plus 15 monochrome illustrations by John Vassos, each preceded by an unnumbered page with facing caption. Black boards with the title gilt stamped on the front board and backstrip, decorative black and gold endpapers with Vassos design. The backstrip is faded, and the front board is also lightly discolored at the edges. No dust-jacket.

Oscar Wilde began writing this one-act tragedy in Paris in 1891. It depicts the story of Princess Salome, stepdaughter of Herod Anitpas, her dance of the seven veils; the execution of John at Salome's instigation. The play was originally published in French (1893) and in English only one year later. Wilde submitted the play to the leading French actress Sarah Bernhardt, who accepted it for production in her 1892 season at the Royal English Opera House, in London, but because the play depicted biblical characters it was banned in Britain and was not performed publicly there until 1931.
This edition is accompanied by the haunting and elegant art-deco illustrations of John Vassos (1898 – 1985) whose career as an American artist and industrial designer helped define the shape of radio, television, broadcasting equipment, and computers for the Radio Corporation of America for almost four decades. This is Gilpin's third in his series of works tracing picturesque beauty in British natural landscapes. In it he portrays the landscapes of Scottish Highlands, and describes them lyrically in his text. A lush volume containing most of J. M. Barrie's (1860-1937) plays, 26 out of the 38 he wrote, of which 12 are one-act plays. This work was reprinted several times from its first issue in 1928, attesting to the popularity of his works for the theater, many of which discuss social concerns. The Twelve Pound Look (1910) concerns a wife leaving her 'typical' husband once she can gain an independent income. Other plays, such as Mary Rose (1920) and Dear Brutus (1917), revisit the idea of the ageless child and parallel worlds. Contemporary half calf with marbled boards; five raised bands, gilt rules, decorative motifs, and title on black morocco label spine; hinges and edges rubbed; front hinge of Volume 1 cracked internally; t .e. g., rest uncut. Pages are bright and bindings tight, light foxing on a few pages and typical offset opposite plates.
Vol. 1 includes 3 copper engravings etched by R Fenner, a large folded map 12 3/8 x 21 in / 313 x 534 mm, engraved by R Penny. Two-inch tear to one fold, otherwise solid and some offset; and a page of sheet music with "Dog Dance of the Sioux" and "Chippewa Scalp Dance" Map of the Country Embracing the Oute of the Expedition of 1823, Commanded by Major S H Long. Vol. 2 includes four engravings by R Fenner, 2 of waterfalls and 2 of shells, plus three fold-out calendars and a 9-page "Vocabulary of Indian Languages" in the Appendix.
