Combe, William (uncredited). Illustrated by Thomas Rowlandson Journal of Sentimental Travels in the Southern Provinces of France Shortly Before the Revolution; Embellished with Seventeen Coloured Engravings, from Designs by T. Rowlandson, Esq. London: Rudolph Ackermann, 1821. FIRST EDITION 8vo, 9 5/16 x 6 in. (245 x 155 mm); pp. tile page + ii + 291 + [1] + 18 bound-in hand-colored aquatint plates from designs by T. Rowlandson (although the title page calls for only 17 engravings this copy contains 18, as called for in the list of "Directions to the Binder"). Each plate bears the imprint, Pubd. at R. Ackerman's Repository of Arts No. 101 Strand date 1820 or 1821. Printed on cream wove paper, light foxing on front pages and versos of some engravings, some plate offsetting, else clean and bright. Later three quarter red mottled calf binding by Riviere with gilt fillets on corner and spine pieces, marbled cloth, five raised bands with gilt compartments, black morocco title labels, marbled end-papers, t.e.g., slight wear to joints and corners. [Tooley 415; Abbey Travel 89; ]. A complete specimen (with advertisement at end) of this humorous and engaging social and political satire just before the French Revolution. The 18 colored plates are by English artist and caricaturist Thomas Rowlandson (1757-1827). Rowlandson is known for his political satire and social observation. He was a prolific printmaker, and illustrated many novels, humorous books, and topographical works. Like other caricaturists of the Georgian Era (Gillray, Cruikshank), his caricatures are often robust or bawdy. Condition: Near fine. WILLIAM COMBE (1742 – 1823) was a British writer best known as the author of The Three Tours of Doctor Syntax, a comic poem, illustrated by artist Thomas Rowlandson's color plates. He also wrote the texts for various illustrated books, including Oxford, Cambridge and Westminster published by Ackermann.

M. Barrie's (1860-1937) plays, 26 out of the 38 he wrote, of which 12 are one-act plays. This work was reprinted several times from its first issue in 1928, attesting to the popularity of his works for the theater, many of which discuss social concerns. The Twelve Pound Look (1910) concerns a wife leaving her 'typical' husband once she can gain an independent income. Other plays, such as Mary Rose (1920) and Dear Brutus (1917), revisit the idea of the ageless child and parallel worlds. However, Barrie's most lasting fame comes from creating PETER PAN, which is included in this volume, and had its first performance at the Duke of York Theatre in 1904.
