Douglas Ferguson for Pigeon Forge Crater Glaze Bowl #3, American Studio Pottery
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Vintage hand-thrown bowl features complex Crater glaze in mocha and latte brown colors. Minimal color palette and streamlined shape of the piece allow the textured glaze with variations from semi-matte to high gloss to take the spotlight; slightly asymmetrical rim adds hand-crafted, Organic Modern mood to the bowl's design. The bowl is personally signed by Douglas Ferguson on the bottom with his name and "Pigeon Forge Pottery". The Crater glaze has become one of the most recognizable glazes made by the Pigeon Forge Pottery. Often commonly referred to as "Volcanic" or "Lava" glaze, the Crater glaze was developed and made in several colors. We are offering a vase and 4 more bowls in different shapes by Douglas Ferguson, done in variations of Crater glazes, in separate listings. Douglas Ferguson (1912-1999) was an established Tennessee pottery artist; he received a degree in Art Design Studies from Mars Hill College and worked in the Ceramic Research Laboratory for the Tennessee Valley Authority in Norris, TN, from 1935 to 1947, where he experimented with local clays. In 1946 he started Pigeon Forge Pottery in an old tobacco barn with his wife Ruth and Ernest Wilson, his colleague at the Ceramic Research Laboratory. He formulated many of his own glazes, including crystalline and Crater glaze. In 1957 he created the Clingman Dome tea set, named by Ferguson for the highest peak in the Great Smoky Mountains, which the state of Tennessee presented to Queen Elizabeth. Ferguson became a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild in 1948 and remained active until 1998, receiving Life Membership in 1991. He earned two awards from the Tennessee Arts and Crafts Festival in Nashville, received the Rotary Certificate of Distinguished Service, and was featured in books on Appalachian...

Joseph Morel for Zellique Pulled Feather Bowl, American Studio Art Glass, 1988
By Zellique Studio 1
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Vintage art glass bowl features striking Art Deco style 5-lobed pulled feather decor in blue, purple, and Bordeau red glass, enclosed in clear glass. The center of the bowl has a convex element, adding an Op-Art element to the composition. The design of the bowl is reminiscent of the pulled feather pieces that Morel created while at Orient & Plume, but the choice of semi-transparent and clear glass instead of colored iridescent glass, used in his earlier works, shows a Post Modern influence and a more contemporary take on the American Art Nouveau glass tradition. The bowl is signed in etching by the artist on the bottom with "Zellique Studio JM 8-1988 FBVI98". Joseph Morel is an established American glass artist, based in California. He began his career in glass artist at California State University, Chico; after graduating in 1973, he worked at Orient & Flume Art Glass, an internationally renowned glass studio, where he was mentored by visiting European glass masters over the next seven years. Orient & Flume early work was directed toward recreating the silver-luster or iridescent glass of turn-of-the-century artists like Tiffany, Steuben, and Loetz, for example, Tiffany Cypriote glass and Steuben Aurenes. The company regularly drew in other artists with various skills in working glass, creating learning opportunities for their employees. In 1980, Morel opened Zellique Art Glass in Benicia, California, where he was able to utilize his skills a glass designer. As the American art glass movement grew, other glass studios opened in Bay Area in 1980s - 1990s; in early 2000s there were five glassblowing studios in Benicia: Zellique Art Glass, Lindsay Art Glass, Nourot Glass, Opal, and Smyers Glass...

Franciscan by Gladding McBean El Patio Jug Carafe w/ Lid, Sea Mist Green 1930s
By Franciscan China 1, Gladding, McBean
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Vintage Art deco style carafe or jug with lid features simple, clean design, the iconic “pretzel” shaped cup handle, and high gloss turquoise glaze. It's a part of El Patio line, attributed to Mary Grant, the first dinnerware line produced by Gladding McBean under their Franciscan Pottery division in 1934. The glaze color, Glacial Blue, is one of the first 8 glaze colorways for the line. El Patio line had three versions of the carafe – one with a wooden handle, one with a ceramic handle, and another with a metal holder; this carafe has the build-in ceramic handle, resulting in streamlined, monochromatic look. The carafe is marked on the bottom with the oval GMCB mark that was in use from 1934 to 1938. The mark dates the piece to the earliest years of the production of El Patio, one of the five most important California solid colored dinnerware lines of the 1930s, alongside Pacific Hostessware, Bauer Ringware, Metlox 200 Series, and Vernon Kilns Early California. The Gladding, McBean & Company, one of the biggest potteries in Southern California, was founded in 1875 in Lincoln, California. In 1934 the company began the manufacture of dinnerware and art ware under the trade name Franciscan Ware...

Lee Levy Multi Spouted Vase, American Studio Pottery
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Vintage ceramic bud vase features sculptural multi spouted shape and stunning textured drip glaze in earthy, organic brown palette. The gradation glaze color and abstract graphic pattern of the main decor emphasize the soft, rounded shape of the vase; the use of shades of brown, from dark espresso to mocha to off-shite cappuccino, creates rich and varied, but monochromatic palette that does not overpower the complex form and shape of the vase. The vase is signed on the bottom with LEE, that was Lee Levy customary signature; it is not dated, but the style of the piece is consistent with her Mid-Century Modern pieces created in 1960s-1970s. Leah "Lee" Levy (1922 - 2011) was an established pottery artist based in Upstate New York area. She was born in Pinsk, formerly in Poland, now in Belarus, and moved to the United States in 1929, growing up in Brookline, Massachusetts. She and her husband Irving started their first pottery studio in Long Island, New York, in late 1940s, while training at the Alfred University School of Ceramics alongside with some of the foremost artists and craftsman in America. Since 1946, Alfred University in Alfred, New York was a home for School for American Craftsmen, with the faculty that included Edwin Blanchard Brown, Ernest Frank Brace, Laurits Eichner, Philip Morton, Charles Reese, Ethel Mitchell, Robert Savage, Thomas Mclure, and most importantly for Levy, the renowned ceramists Linn Phelan and Herbert Sanders...

Alfredo Santarelli Pair of White Reticulated Majolica Table Lamps, 1940s-1950s
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Sculptural majolica lamps feature complex hand-sculpted reticulated bodies with 4 vertical segments; two narrower segments are composed around the central medallions of Sun God face, surrounded by abstract geometric pattern, and two wider segments consist of complex lattice work, influenced by Art Deco and Renaissance styles. Minimal elongated shape of the lamps balances highly textured reticulated designs, and the choice of white glaze adds a Modernist touch to the pieces. The lamps are mounted on brass bases with brass fixtures; they are signed by the artist on the inner rims of the ceramic bodies. The ceramic parts were acquired from the importing warehouse that operated in 1940s-1970s; they were stored unused, as old new stock, for at least 50 years, before finally being wired. It is quire rare to find a pair of lamps by an important Italian ceramic artist of early 20th century; we are excited to be able to offer another pair of white majolica lamps by Alfredo Santarelli in different shape in a separate listing. The lamps are fully operational with the new brass single turn knob sockets, wired for US 110v, standard polarized plugs. The ceramics are in good vintage condition with some age-appropriate signs of storage wear on the glaze that are not detracting from the overall quality of the pieces, and are shown in the pictures. The issues can be corrected professionally at discretion of the customer; we chose to not restore the ceramic parts to preserve the original condition and the vintage charm of the lamps. Alfredo Santarelli (1874-1957) was born in Gualdo Tadino, Italy; he is considered one of the most important Italian ceramic artists of the 20th century. His talent in drawing and his mastery in the tin glazing technique (lusterware) won him a large number of golden medals in International and Italian ceramic exhibitions. His excellent portraits and classic subjects are prized collectors’ items, but he also interpreted Islamic, Liberty and Art Deco designs and shapes with great originality. In the second half of the 20’s his art evolved in line with the contemporary trends. Santarelli started his career in the pottery studio of Paolo Rubboli...
