About the Item

Vintage set of 4 dinner plates and 4 salad plates was made by Haviland, Limoges in rare Rivoli pattern. The decor consists of a wide band of leaves and berries or flower buds in warm green and soft rusted orange colors with gold accents; the main decor is framed by a brown rim and gold band with abstract neoclassical pattern band. The decor is reminiscent of Matignon by Robert Haviland & Parlon in Rust colorway and would work well mixed with pieces from that collection. The Matignon pattern was specially created for Madame Chirac for use in the French Prime Minister’s residence; it is based on a design from the Sèvres Museum. It is quite possible that Rivoli pattern was inspired by the same sources. The pattern went through a rework, with this version being replaced in 1962 by a so-called Platinum Rivoli, with very minimal platinum trim on white porcelain background; the Platinum Rivoli was in production until 1986, and is more common than this decor. The plates are marked with the Haviland Limoges France mark (Castle mark) that was in use since 1958 and was replaced in 1967. The marks date the set to late 1950s - early 1960s. Rare, hard to find set will make a great gift to a collector or a design enthusiast, can be used casually or on a fully set table for the special occasion, and will make a perfect addition to a wide range of tablescapes, from Traditional to Victorian, Transitional, Hollywood Regency, Glam, or Collected.

Haviland Limoges Hand Painted Art Deco Porcelain Plates Water Lilies
By Haviland & Co.
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Set of 4 unique, antique plates was made by Haviland & Cie in Limoges, France. The plates were hand painted by a professional artist in a decorating studio with Art Deco motif of five water lilies on pale blue background. Calm blue and green colors are accentuated by bright yellow centers of the flowers and the gold rims. The advent of Arts and Craft Movement created the notion that the aesthetic quality of everyday utilitarian objects could be improved by merit of craftsmanship, and many painters and artists felt inspired to merge their activities into decorative arts, such as ceramics, decor objects, or dinnerware. Large number of wholesale and retail firms, such as Pickard, Stouffer, or Brauer studios, and many high-end department stores that carried factory decorated Limoges's porcelain, had their own china decorating departments and produced high quality hand painted porcelain. Undecorated Haviland china...
