Cauldon set of 6 luncheon plates in H8413 pattern, 1904-1915

About the Item

Up for your consideration is the set of 6 luncheon plates made by Cauldon for Higgins & Seiter, New York. The plates are " in diameter and are in very good antique condition with minimal to none wear to gold. The decoration consists of Greek key motif on gold along the rim of the plates and abstract new-classical geometric pattern in beige/brown color streaming towards the center of the plates. On the back the plates are marked with manufacturer backmarks of Cauldon England, dating back to 1904-1920 and decorator marks "Cauldon England for Higgins & Seiter New York", dating to 1904-1915, as well as pattern names. Cauldon was a china and earthenware manufacturer, located in famous Stoke-On-Trent area; it was a direct successor of renown Brown-Westhead Moore & Co company that was operating from 1862 to 1904, and it kept same management and ownership after being incorporated as Cauldon Ltd. The company was known for exhibiting at multiple International Universal Exhibitions, winning a gold medal in Paris in 1878 and manufacturing china services for Prince of Wales and Tzar of Russia. Cauldon was reusing the previously created patterns as well as creating the new ones. The company was working with various American porcelain importers, such as J. McD & S Co., the largest china wholesaler and retailer in USA in 1910s, as well as important English distributors. Higgins & Seiter store was originally located on 53-55 West 21st St in Manhattan, prime location for high-end retail stores in early 1900s, in a lofty new building created by architect Mortimer C. Merritt in 1901, carrying strong influences of Beaux Arts, neo-classical, and new-Renaissance design. The overall palette of the facade was leaning towards natural buff and earthen tone colors, done in stone and brick, with mini-Greek temple decor adorned with Greek key motive placed tucked into window opening on 3rd floor and Greek key frieze above 2nd floor. The store was known as one of the prime showrooms of the time, displaying Limoges and English china and dinnerware, as well as Carrara marble, bronzes, and glassware. The plates' color palette and prominent Greek key decor reflects the building's design, tying the Staffordshire potteries tradition to New York changing social scene at the turn of the century, and making them a highly collectible little piece of history and a conversation starter.
