Chinese Antique Qing Carved "Mutton Fat" Nephrite Plaque Pendant Certified

Elegant, rare, and dating to the late Qing period (circa 1890s), this hand-carved nearly colorless white nephrite plaque has been etched on both sides. One one, the Chinese mythological figure known as Zhang Guo Lao is depicted riding a mule. On the opposite side, a magpie sits on a branch of cherry blossoms. The magpie is associated with intelligence. The carving is breathlessly simple and excellent; the work executed -of course- without the aid of electricity or modern tools.
Measuring 42.54mm x 29.92mm, the plaque has a hole drilled through the center, which is original to the piece. A silver bail is threaded through the hole and a pair of beads -black jade and coral- reside at the bottom. The jade plaque hands from a 1920s silver chain that is 32" in length.

A rare and gorgeous men's natural and untreated jadeite jade ring from the Midcentury. I look at the stone and see purple jade; deeper than lavender. But an astute client wrote me and remarked that it looked more like "denim" to him than purple. I thought, denim? Like jeans? Then I realized, there must be a specific color called denim. I still think the jade looks purple. But I also think it does look like denim, at least the color sample you will see among the images.
A more classic jade ring has never been made: from the sculpted, classic lines of the shank itself to the painstaking Florentine finish etched entirely by hand on the shoulders; it's simply an iconic design. Rendered in buttery 14K yellow gold, this one-of-a-kind ring is hallmarked for Los Angeles jeweler George Barmache and dates to 1965. Most people have never heard of this jeweler but I have: three of the finest jade rings in my collection were created by him. His pieces are rare; but when encountered they are always exquisite, featuring the finest quality jade.
Here, the 16.7mm x 12mm cabochon of natural, untreated lavender jade is a richly saturated tone the gem lab calls; "grayish violetish-blue." The stone is translucent and has absolutely none of the diluted-with-milk quality we often see with lavender jade. And I'll say it again because with lavender jade it's unusual: this is a translucent stone. The best camera, lenses and studio lighting can't begin to capture the unusual beauty of this ring. This extraordinary ring was hand-carved from a single piece or natural and untreated GIA-Certified Burmese jadeite jade. The translucent stone is purple with a hint of light green. Click on the image of the GIA certificate and you will see that it does not describe the color as "lavender" but rather "purple." Making this ring all the more rare. The stone is luminous and absolutely gorgeous in all light; whether direct sunlight or the soft, low light of evening when the ring seems to glow from within.
This is a large, substantial ring that was created for a size 10 ¼ - 10 ½ finger. Because the ring is thick, it's not possible to get a perfect reading on my ring mandrel, but if your finger is anywhere from a size 9 ½ (like mine) or a 10 ½, it should fit (though with a 9 ½ finger, the ring will have much more play). If your finger is smaller, your jeweler can create an insert liner from gold, silver or any metal you like and this will allow the ring to fit a much smaller finger -it just depends on how thick the liner is. This would be a project for you and your own local jeweler.

The luminous, translucent fog-toned jade beads measure approximately 8.83mm and are on their original silk string. The necklace is finished with the classic Gump's 14k yellow gold clasp, that features both the metal fitness mark and the Gump's logo. Gump's never used treated jade in any of their jewelry; all authentic Gump's jewelry is natural and untreated "A" jade. These extraordinary beads are in soothing tones of soft, soft violet and the palest yellow. The palate here may be neutral but the impact certainly is not.
