About the Item
This opera-length (33") nephrite jade necklace is exactly like the one your Chinese great-grandmother wore or maybe still does wear. Those of us without a Chinese great-grandmother must make do with whatever treasures we can find. And this is one of those found treasures.
A proper old-school Chinese nephrite beaded necklace where the nephrite was mined in the mountains of China, then each bead was cut by hand and polished by hand. Irregularities abound. It is a gorgeous strand of beads. We, today, are accustomed to the "brighter" nephrite jade from Canada. But the deposits in China offered up distinctive, olive-green stone like this. With high translucency and variations between each bead. The beads have a sensual waxy luster; so different from the hard shine of fine jadeite.
There are 90 beads in total, measuring from 7.65mm to 8.49mm, but because the necklace is long and size difference between beads slight, it "reads" as a uniform strand, not one that graduates. A 14K clasp finishes the piece.
The beads are older than the clasp. I can't say with any certainty how old the beads are, but they are consistent with beads carved around 1900. The clasp is a later edition, along with the stringing -both of which date to approximately 1950.
This gorgeous necklace will need to be restrung at some point in the not-too-distant future. But they drape perfectly now. And with care, can continue to be worn. Just be mindful that this is old stringing. Your jeweler can restring them for you at any time for a nominal fee.
This iconic nephrite jade necklace ships with a certificate from Stone Group Labs stating that it is nephrite without treatment.
