Antique Chinese Art Deco Nephrite Ring Certified Untreated, Exquisite Old-School
About the Item
This Art Deco era ring (circa 1930s) features a hand-carved nephrite jade in the shape of a bottle gourd; a powerful symbol in the historical Chinese culture endowed with magical significance. The bottle gourd carried medicine, water, and food; it could even be played as a musical instrument. This humble member of the Cucurbitaceae family is so steeped in historical meaning that I could write several volumes about just this one iconic form.
The nephrite bottle has the most beautiful surface texture, as it was carved prior to China's industrial revolution. The carving is securely set within its own custom mounting, handmade from silver. The setting is thick and sturdy. It has a rich patina, testifying to the fact that this ring was loved deeply and worn daily. But despite a century of wear, it is fully ready, able, and willing to move forward through another century of life. The jade measures 20.39mm x 11.5mm and is a dark pine-green. It's nephrite jade from China, not Canada; Chinese nephrite is the finest in the world. But Canadian nephrite can be thrilling and exquisite as well. Though old Chinese nephrite in this specific tone of green -I myself live in New England among Pine trees and there is the slightest yellow inside the green of pine. Yet at the same time, in the right, the yellow seems to vanish and the green looks grand and imperial. It's too dense to be semi-transparent like imperial jadeite, but there is a measure of translucency to this stone. You'll see in bright light that the color itself feels pedigreed. The surface texture, on the other hand, looks best in reflected light -which is when the jade stone is darkest.
Currently a size 6 ½, it could be resized by your local jeweler. Ships with q certificate from Stone Group Labs stating that it is untreated nephrite jade.
