About the Item

Large Satsuma porcelain vase from the Meiji on a gilt metal frame from the Napoleon III period. On one side of the vase is represented a deity, probably Amaterasu, with children playing at his feet, which is recognizable by his golden oreole, representing the solar disk, Amaterasu being the goddess of the sun. On the opposite side Amaterasu with three characters in court dress in front of her, a teenager and two older men, probably emperors, indeed in Japanese culture Amaterasu is the ancestor of all emperors. The two scenes are framed by decorations of bamboo branches and gilded foliage with slight relief, typical of Satsuma porcelain, are presented on a black-brown glaze. The base of the vase has feet in lion's feet, surmounted by leaves and foliage, the strapping presents two wreaths of foliage and flowers chiseled in the metal. The neck of the vase has a strapping with an openwork gallery, punctuated by two scroll handles. This Napoleon 3 period frame takes up the characteristics of the Louis 15 style. Japan XIXth Century
