Antique “Waster” Celadon Bowl, Sawankhalok kilns, Thailand, 14th/15th century.

About the Item

Antique “Waster” Celadon Bowl, Sawankhalok kilns, Thailand, 14th/15th century. A thickly potted wheel thrown stoneware bowl with everted rim having an upturned lip. The cavetto with incised lines. The outside wall has some incised bands but is mostly smooth and undecorated. All covered in a thin transparent celadon glaze having small crackle and some pooling, stopping short of the raised foot rim revealing a light beige biscuit and a prominent circular pontil scar on the countersunk base. Condition: Large firing crack at the base of the bowl, two large repairs at the lip and one small undecorated fill repair on the foot, small firing blisters, otherwise good. Measuring: 3.5 inches high x 9.1 inches in diameter (9 x 23 cm). 2 lbs. 10 oz. (1175 g.) 14th/15th century. Provenance: Dr. Philip Gould, New York, NY Dealer’s Note: The Sawankhalok kilns produced a great quantity of functional ceramics for export and domestic use. The celadon glazed wares were a popular export in the 15th century. The wood fired dragon kilns had a fair number of firing accidents that occurred in the firing of the precariously pontil perched pots in the volatile climbing kiln. After firing, ceramics that were not fit for purpose were discarded at the kiln site. These discarded ceramics are referred to as “Wasters”. Centuries later through excavation ceramics have been salvaged and repurposed. This particular bowl with a thick body that deserved to crack in the firing has been repurposed as an intriguing decorative ornament with a pleasant celadon glaze. At some point someone deemed it appropriate to restore the two apparent breaks on the lip in the glaze color matching manner.

Antique Thai Celadon Stemmed Dish Sukhothai Sawankhalok
Located in Atlanta, GA
A celadon stemmed dish with underglaze deep blue decoration from Sukhothai (a former Kingdom in nowadays central Thailand) circa 14th-16th century. The pedestal dish was a typical ceramic output from Sawankhalok region, likely one of the kilns in Sri Sachanalai that thrived during 14th-15th century. Sukhothai ceramics made a large portion of export from Asia during that period due to the political policy in Ming Dynasty that banned the ocean faring (the so called Ming Gap). This stemmed dish, likely an export item, was modeled in a Classic Chinese form. The under-glaze deep blue decorations depicting the scrolling vines and flowers, as well as the archaic band around the base, are also reminiscent to the designs found in blue and white porcelain in Ming dynasty. The piece shows a fine crackles and age wear on the dish surface, an indication of appropriate patina. Under the reddish slip paint of the base, the gray paste can be discerned in small area, which is also a characteristic of the Thai celadon...
