Japanese Ao-Oribe Glazed Stoneware Dish, Early Edo Period, 17th Century, Japan

About the Item

A fine and rare Japanese ao-oribe glazed minoyaki stoneware dish, late Momoyama or early Edo period, 17th century, Japan. The circular dish of wheel thrown stoneware, glazed in the ao-oribe palette, with green, pink, and cream glazes. The dish decorated with a free flowing, and somewhat abstracted design of images of water, earth, and sky. The water of piled copper green glaze with pink edges, formed as a wave. A spoked waterwheel in brown iron oxide above. The earth of cream colored crackle glaze, with an abstracted brown iron oxide glazed image of yarn, dyed fabric, and a spinning tool. A cross hatch pattern and double lozenge complete the design. The sky featuring an abstracted brown iron oxide glazed cloud and raindrops under a copper green glazed sky with blushy pink borders. The backside of the dish with more pools of copper green glaze, continuing from the front of the dish. A pair of abstracted birds with tail feathers raised, and a double lozenge, all in iron oxide brown fill the remaining space. The rest unglazed, revealing the dark stoneware body.
