About the Item

An unusual Japanese Imari porcelain decagonal (ten sided) dish with underglaze blue and overglaze enamels, Edo to Meiji Period, mid 19th century, Japan. The ten sided dish features a charming Chinese inspired scene to the interior with a Taoist sage watching over two boys at play within an idyllic fenced garden setting. A large gnarled pine tree towers overhead, while plants bloom in the background among rocky outcrops. The sage is dressed in loose fitting robes tied with an attractive yellow sash over loose pants, the hat of a Taoist master upon his head. The boys are dressed in traditional Chinese clothing. The wide brim of the dish features images of cranes in flight against a deep red ground, colorful clouds streaming around them. A geometric kikko (tortoiseshell) patterned reserve separating the cranes. The rim originally fully gilt. Now the gilding mostly rubbed away. The gilding to the interior of the dish, including the pine tree and sun, now mellowed with some rubbing as well. The back of the dish decorated in underglaze blue enamel against a white ground with mokko (quatrefoil) shapes and inyo (yin-yang) shapes. The underside with a mark in underglaze blue along with five spur marks.
