About the Item

A fantastic small Japanese Satsuma vase with image of writhing dragons, Meiji Period, circa 1900, Japan. The vase of elegant baluster form, with a slightly flared foot, slender body, high shoulders, short neck, and slightly everted mouth with a rolled rim. The vase is expertly painted with a pair of writhing dragons chasing the flaming pearl of wisdom. Their serpentine bodies undulate and encircle the vase. Their golden bodies standing out dramatically against deep gosu blue clouds and the creamy glazed ground. The neck and shoulders finely painted with a band of scrolling chrysanthemum against a gosu blue ground, with further geometric bands above and below. The foot features a a tall border of stylized crashing waves in gosu blue and gilt. With a two character mark reading "Satsuma" under the Shimazu family crest, all in gilt. With an associated hardwood stand.

A fine and elegant Japanese Satsuma tripod incense burner, koro, with pierced metal lid, signed Eizan (?) Meiji Period, late 19th century, Japan. The koro, or censer, features a stoneware body of slightly compressed globular form, supported on three short and squat legs. The wide mouth with a recessed metal rim, and topped by an openwork metal lid topped with overlapping chrysanthemum blossoms of silver repousse. The body of the koro finely painted with fan shaped cartouches. The fans in the foreground with sprays of blossoming chrysanthemum.
