Large Japanese Blue and White Arita Porcelain Charger, Edo Period, 19th C, Japan
About the Item
A large Japanese blue and white decorated Arita porcelain charger, Edo Period, early 19th century, Japan.
The large and shallow blue and white Arita porcelain charger measures 18 7/8" in diameter, and is well painted with a delightful scene of a large and wise carp swimming against the current in rushing water. The power of the carp is on full display, as it pushes it body mostly out of the water, its scales wonderfully picked out.
Along the bank of the stream or river is a large spray of peony in full bloom, surrounded by young pine saplings. Stalks of wheat with full and heavy ears bend gracefully in the wind, while a pair of butterflied flit about.
The scene is surrounded by reverse blue and white painted floral and foliate scrolled border.
The back of the charger sparsely decorated with a Buddhist parasol motif, with stylized shells between.
With nine spur marks to the glazed interior of the foot. The foot rim unglazed.
The charger with some firing flaws and glaze contractions that give it character and charm.
