About the Item
A magnificent Chinese powder blue glazed porcelain charger with painted gilt decoration, late Qing Dynasty, circa 1900, China.
The large and impressive Chinese porcelain charger glazed a rich and deep cobalt blue, known as powder blue, and gilt painted with a fantastic design of a pair of lively dragons writhing and dancing among the clouds, the flaming Pearl of Wisdom between them. The short sides of the charger featuring a band of ruyi lapets. The rim is fully gilt.
The dragons are beautifully painted, with a strong sense of motion and vitality. One ascends, while the other descends. Their gilt painted scales shimmer as they vie for the flaming Pearl of Wisdom just beyond reach. Flames surround them as they dance against a dense field of golden clouds.
The back side of the charger with the same deep blue glaze, and was originally gilt painted with a series of stylized lotus flowers. Unfortunately most of the gilt painting worn.
Set on a short foot rim, the interior of the foot glazed a simple white.
