Large Japanese Imari Porcelain Charger with Koi, Meiji Period, late 19th century
About the Item
A boldly decorated large Japanese Imari porcelain scalloped edge charger with koi fish, Meiji Period, late 19th century, Japan.
The large, shallow charger features a central design of three carp, koi, two in gilt, one in underglaze blue with gilt scales, all swimming in a rushing current. The koi are set against a bold seigaiha, wave patterned, green enameled ground with large trifolia arrow head leaves in iron red enamel.
Koi swimming against the current often represents strength and the ability to overcome obstacles. Koi are also symbols of fortune and luck. The seigaiha pattern evokes lapping waves, wishing the viewer tranquility. The arrowhead leaves represent wishes for good health.
The border of this large charger features alternating panels of large kotobuki characters, brocade designs, and uchiwa shaped reserves. The character kotobuki, meaning longevity, is written in kanji using a running script in gilt on an iron red ground. The brocade patterns are the kikkou, tortoiseshell pattern, symbolizing long life, and the kagome, basket-weave pattern, offering spiritual protection. The uchiwa, fan shaped reserves, feature abstracted floral patterns.
The back of the charger decorated with a series of shippo, or treasure, shapes. A single spur mark to the base.
