About the Item

An unusual and very attractive large Satsuma parasol shaped bowl signed Chin Jukan and attributed to Chin Jukan XII (1835 - 1906), Meiji Period, circa 1890, Japan. The bowl of whimsical form in the shape of an inverted parasol. The body fluted to mimic the bamboo ribs of the parasol, with the red painted tips sticking out over the rim of the bowl. The bowl is boldly and exuberantly painted with a large scene of autumn flowers and grasses emerging from a rocky outcrop to both the interior and exterior. Late season pink and white peonies bloom through lush green foliage, while chrysanthemums in blue, red, and yellow surround them. Autumn grasses, gone to seed, are painted in red, their heavy heads seeming to sway in the wind. Golden billowy clouds dot the sky. The underside signed in red "Chin Jukan" 寿官 under the Shimazu family crest with an impressed mark below. The signature is attributed to Chin Jukan XII. The Chin Jukan lineage is one of the oldest Satsuma lineages. Founded by captured Korean potters in late 16th century, it continues to this day, with the 15th head of the lineage presiding.
