Chinese Porcelain Famille Rose Fencai Peach Sage Ewer Fu Jian Hui Guan Mark 20c
Located in Richmond, CA
Step into a vivid chapter of Chinese history with this exquisite Chinese vintage porcelain polychrome ewer, a piece that embodies the rich cultural and artistic tapestry of the late Qing to early Republic period. The ewer presents itself as a large, vibrant peach, a symbol of longevity and immortality in Chinese culture, offering a visual treat with its intricate detailing and vibrant hues.
Beside the peach sits a bearded sage in robes, a figure that brings a touch of wisdom and reverence to the piece. The sage, depicted in a contemplative pose, adds a layer of narrative depth to the ewer, inviting viewers to delve into the stories and philosophies of ancient China. The ewer's handle and spout, crafted to resemble branches, blend seamlessly with the overall design, adding a touch of natural elegance to the piece.
A significant highlight of this ewer is the apocryphal "Fu Jian Hui Guan" seal mark found on its flat bottom, a mark that evokes a rich history. The original Fu Jian Hui Guan, also known as the Tianhou Xinggong, is a closed classical temple built in 1884 and completed in 1906, serving as a place of worship for the sea goddess Mazu, showcasing the typical Minnan style. This establishment, popular among overseas Chinese communities, particularly in Southeast Asia, became a hub for the creation of porcelain sculptures, often depicting deities, under the influence of renowned artists like You Zechang. These creations, distinct in style and highly revered, found a cherished place in the hearts of overseas Chinese communities, marking a significant chapter in the history of Chinese porcelain artistry.
This vintage ewer...

Japanese Contemporary Blue Pink Platinum Porcelain Vase by Master Artist, 6
Located in Takarazuka, JP
Exquisite contemporary Japanese dimpled decorative porcelain vase, hand painted in vivid blue, green and pink on an elegantly shaped porcelain body against a striking platinum background, a signed piece by highly acclaimed award-winning Japanese master porcelain artist in the Imari-Arita tradition. In 2016, the British Museum added a work by this artist to its collection of contemporary Japanese porcelain, a large lidded jar in the Imari-Arita polychrome enamel tradition.
The artist is the recipient of numerous awards for his exceptional porcelain work and his unique signature gold and platinum work on porcelain.
This elegant vase is the perfect canvas for a stunning floral pattern, set against a dimpled platinum background. The artist continues the platinum work to decorate the inside of this magnificent piece.
The unfired porcelain shell is impressed with hundreds of dimples, to which gold and platinum are applied at the final stage of production. The dimples are designed to accentuate the luster of the precious metals by varying the thickness of application and allowing the cratering to convey a sense of depth.
“Fired-on gold,” his signature style, highlights unique techniques for incorporating gold and platinum into the hand painting and multiple firing processes that yield a stunningly opulent look. The polychrome overglaze is fired at 800 degrees, followed by the application of gold and platinum that are fired at slightly lower temperature to maintain the luster of the precious metals. As a result, a single piece may undergo as many as five-ten firings. This artist's profile is available upon request.

Large Tang Dynasty Prancing Horse with Oxford TL Test
Located in Atlanta, GA
This spirited Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD) prancing horse is handsomely model with one foreleg raised, it’s mane swept to one side, expressive pricked ears, flared nostrils and open mouth bearing its teeth. The tail is docked tail and is neatly tied. This terracotta horse has traces of painted pigmentation that once adorned it.
After their Han ancestors, the emperors of the Tang Dynasty continued to import purebred horses. Most of them served in wars but the most handsome were kept and trained for parades. We know that the Emperor Xuanzong (712-756) had a stud farm with 400 horses trained to dance to music. This prancing horse is a representation of the dancing horses of the Tang dynasty.

Large Japanese Blue and White Vase by Mazuku Kozan Meiji Period
By Makuzu Kozan
Located in Atlanta, GA
A striking blue and white vase from the studio of Japanese Potter Makuzu Kozan, also known as Miyagawa Kozan (1842–1916), one of the most established and collected ceramist from Meiji Period. Born as Miyagawa Toranosuke, Kozan established his pottery studio in Yokohama around 1870s and later became one of the appointed artist to the Japanese Imperial household. His work was exhibited in many international fairs that the Meiji government participated at the turn of the century and won many grand prizes.
With a relative large size, this vase is decorated with underglaze cobalt blue using the novel technique developed by Kozan called Fuki-e (the blow painting), in order to achieve the striking dimensional misty winter landscape. The pine trees with upright trunks and down-sweeping branches appear receding into the depth of the mist, forming an visually unending forest. Known as one of the most creative ceramists, around 1880s, Kozan started experimenting with new chemical colors from the West in the format of his porcelain glaze. New colors allowed him to create underglaze design that appeared bright, smooth and glossy. He even invented his own receipt of cobalt blue to achieve a much brighter yet softer shade, as evident on this vase. To create landscape that is realistic and dimensional, more common in the western paintings, he was inspired by the native Japanese ink painting technique developed around 1900 by Yokoyama...

Set of Three Provincial Chinese Wine Jugs, circa 1900
Located in Chicago, IL
These early 20th century ceramic jars from China's Shandong province were formed with a bottle-neck shape meant for storing vinegar or rice wine. We suspect these jars were created to store wine for commercial sale, and were likely stoppered with a cork or wax seal. Left unglazed, the jugs are decorated only the irregular, organic smoke patterns created during the firing process. We love the neutral color story told by this set of vessels...
