Magpie Antique

Very rare vase with "stylized birds / magpies" by Charles Catteau for Boch Freres Keramis D.1366 / form 118 "autographe" Leon Delfant.

They are beautifully decorated with panels on one side with magpies amongst irises and the opposite with sparrows in a magnolia tree.

Oval panels depict the leisure lives of fisherman and strolling scholar. Magpie and deer are symbols of happiness. Pomegranate symbolizes family.

In this print, Chinese boats moored near a rugged coast, with magpies flying in the sky and a poem by Chunagon Yakamochi in the square cartouche in the top right corner.
