About the Item

A small antique wood table from Korea from turn of the 20th century (end of Joseon Dynasty). This type of light weight table is called "Soban" in Korean. which means "Small Tray". It was widely used primarily as individual dining table to present and serve foods, but also as small desk, incense burner holder and altar table. Its lightweight and low profile fits the traditional personal and portable use on the floor. The current table on offer was likely made from Ginko wood and finished in a red lacquer. The top surface with the slightly raised rim has a twelve-sided shape with soft corners. Its surface has a glossier finish compared to the legs, possibly due to the extensive use and reapplication of lacquer over the time. The table is supported by four outwardly turned legs resembling the legs of tiger, therefore this specific type is also known as "Hojokban" (Tiger Leg Tray). Two stretcher bars connect the legs for further stabilization. This is an antique piece and displays wonderful patina from use and care over the years. It is mostly intact, but we did observe historical reinforcement by tiny metal nails on the bottom of the legs where the stretcher attaches. The National Folk Musuem of Korea in Seoul has a large collection of similar Hojokbans such as item 000213, 001516 and 001626.
