About the Item

An exceptional 19th-century Burmese Kammavaca manuscript, composed of 14 lacquered palm-leaf-style panels, each meticulously decorated in orange and gold lacquer with intricate motifs and sacred text. Measuring 6 inches high by 24 inches wide and approximately 2 inches deep when stacked, the manuscript includes its original carved wooden covers, richly ornamented with gilded borders and geometric and floral designs. The Kammavaca is a traditional monastic text presented to Burmese monks at the time of their ordination. Typically composed in the Pali language and written in square script, the passages are religious in nature, covering aspects of discipline and ceremonial codes. This example features lines of carefully applied black or dark brown lacquer text over a brilliant gilded ground, with ornamental framing on each leaf. The craftsmanship is highly representative of Burmese lacquerware from the Mandalay period, known for its intricate surface decoration and ceremonial function. The use of gilt lacquer over bamboo and wood substrates reflects both religious reverence and the elevated status of the manuscript’s recipient. This manuscript is both a sacred object and a work of art—ideal for collectors of Southeast Asian religious artifacts, decorative manuscripts, or lacquer traditions. Dimensions (stacked): 6" H x 24" W x 2" D Origin: Burma (Myanmar), 19th century Condition: Very good antique condition with expected wear to edges and minor flaking consistent with age.
