About the Item
A large and fantastic Japanese cast bronze incense burner, koro, with high relief design, Meiji period, late 19th century, Japan.
The large and tall koro cast in extremely high relief with images of birds, trees, water and turtles.
The censer is surmounted by a pierced cover cast with a lively coiled snake rising up from a rocky outcrop surrounded by blossoming plum, with birds flitting between the branches.
The body of the censer features a pair of phoenixes among paulownia on one side, and an eagle and crane among pine the other. The eagle and one phoenix depicted in flight under billowing clouds. Their outstretched wings extending out considerably form the body of the censer. The blank spaces to the sides of the body would originally have sported handles, which are now unfortunately missing.
Phoenix and paulownia are a popular combination in Japanese art. It is said the phoenix will only nest among the branches of paulownia, while the appearance of a phoenix signals the beginning of a new era of peace and abundance.
Crane and pine are another popular combination in Japanese art. Both are symbols of longevity. The eagle represents power, especially military power.
Below the body are two circular sections cast with plovers darting between crashing waves.
The koro is supported by a splayed pedestal foot cast with minogame cavorting in the waves. Minogame are mythical turtles with long, bushy seaweed tails. They represent longevity and happiness.
