About the Item
Pair of very fine quality Chinese bronze censers feature twin handled tripod forms with wide openings and patinated accents. The open, rounded bodies with square cut looped handles are standing on short, sturdy feet. One of the censers is decorated with 4 highly detailed decorative seals, placed symmetrically on the widest part of the vessel, and another censer has no additional decor; the decor variation is creating a visual and textural interest withing a distinctly matched pair.
The censers are signed with impressed Qianlong mark in "seal script" style Chinese, that roughly translates to 乾隆年制 Qiánlóng nián zhì in modern Simplified Chinese, with Qianlong referring to the Qianlong Emperor (reigned 1735-1799), nian meaning "year" or maybe "era", and zhi - "manufacture". The censers are probably dating from the late 19th century. The traditional wide-mouthed form of the pieces suggests that originally they were intended to be used either as censers, or incense burners, or as a ritual offering vessels for dedicating food, water and alcohol in regular offerings in shrines or ancestral temples to keep the family spirits nourished and happy.
The censers are in very good, original unrestored antique condition with beautiful, age-appropriate patina. The convenient form and size allow them to be used either as incense burners, or as decorative vessels, cachepot or planters; with an insert they can also be used as ikebana vases.
Sculptural, decorative censers with graphic, refined form, high quality craftsmanship, and statement piece presence will make a perfect addition to a wide range of interiors, from Traditional to Mid Century Modern, Eclectic, Transitional, Organic Modern, Collected, or Contemporary.
Provenance: the censers were acquired from an estate of a prominent arts and antiques collector in Western New York.

Stepping away from merely utilitarian view of everyday objects, his recent collections are filled with meaningful textual context while incorporating traditional and modern woodworking techniques. Roman is using practical function as a common denominator to create emotionally charged art objects, blurring the boundary between art and function. While appreciating possibilities of ordinary materials, Roman is developing new mixed media multilayered composite varnishes and utilizes decorative gilding and mica veneer to actively engage ambient light, giving an additional aspect to relation of his objects to their environment. The decision to work in custom format was based on environmental concerns and opposition to culture of mass production and pure consumerism. The choice of materials was heavily influenced by sustainability and environmental concerns. All objects are made locally in the Brooklyn Navy Yard workshop. Elimination of storage and transportation needs for mass-produced furniture in lieu of creating a custom made objects on demand allows us to reduce waste of materials and energy.
