Rare Japanese Meiji Gold Silver Inlay Peacock Bronze Usubata Ikebana Flower Vase
About the Item
Rare peacocks and peonies antique Japanese Meiji period patinated bronze gold and silver inlaid signed Usubata vase for Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangement
Late 19th Century
Peacocks and peonies represent wealth and worldly power. The peacock is associated with Kwan-Yin and is also symbolic of love, kindness and harmony with nature.
The front of this two part Usubata vase depicts a gold and silver inlaid peacock with his full plumage on display standing on a rocky formation adjacent to a impressively sized peony flower in full bloom and gazing upon a golden peahen. The vessel has a pair of attractive handles with the peony motif in profile, ending in classical tripod scrolled feet.
Ideal for a spectacular centerpiece.
Signed on the base of each piece
Height: 11 inches
Diameter: 11.75 inches

Usubata is a two part, three legged vase with a shallow circular basin used to hold a kenzan, a substantial needle pointed weight for holding branches and flower stems in place.
Ikebana is one of the three classical Japanese arts of refinement, together with Kodo, for insense appreciation and Chado for the cultural tradition of the tea ceremony.
Peacocks symbolize the integrity and beauty we can achieve when we show our true colors.

Antique Japanese Mixed Metals Copper & Silver Usubata Ikebana Flower Vase
Located in Philadelphia, PA
A fine antique Japanese flower vase.
In hand-hammered copper (or possibly a thin-bodied bronze) with applied silver bands to rim, footrim, shaped edge, and with a lotus petal border at the joint of neck and body.
Having the usubata form with a wide flared neck and mouth.
The 'usubata' vase is a form favored for large scale floral arrangements by the Ikenobo school, the oldest and largest school of Japanese ikebana founded in the 15th century by Buddhist monk Senno Ikenobo. It is believed that the wide and shallow rim of an usubata vase which displays the surface of the water best imitates natural conditions of growth while also contributing to the longevity of an arrangement with the increased surface area of the water better oxygenating the plants.
The base retains still retains hand-hammered marks.
There is evidence of seams and folds throughout from the construction, and the surface has a cloud-like brown patina throughout.
Simply a wonderful Japanese mixed metal vase...
