Thai Gilt Bronze Seated Buddha, c. 1850
About the Item
Once ornately gilt, this serene bronze seated Buddha was created in Thailand in the mid-19th century. Cast in the older Sukhothai style, the Buddha bears a uniquely Thai flame-like spike stretching upward from the crown of his head. Called an ushnisha, the spike signifies wisdom and the spiritual power of the Buddha's enlightenment.
The Buddha is seated in vajrasana with hands in the bhumisparsha mudra, a gesture representing the moment that the Buddha claimed the earth as witness to his awakening. This posture celebrates the Buddha's unwavering strength of focus as he resists distraction and temptation from the demon King Mara to achieve enlightenment.

This carved stone stele depicts the historical Buddha, known also as Shaka, Shakyamuni, or Siddhartha Gautama. Seated in perpetual meditation, the Buddha embodies virtues of wisdom and composure. Hand-carved of limestone in the style of Northern Wei (386-535) statuary, the Buddha is depicted upon a lotus plinth with legs crossed in lotus position.
