Late Qing Dynasty Chinese Carved Bamboo and Woven Rush Lockable Wedding Basket.

About the Item

This Chinese stackable box made circa 1900-1915 was intended as a wedding basket and is a traditional object of importance within Chinese culture. This one is carved from bamboo, a difficult material to cross cut and carve but an expert industry in China throughout its long history. Composed of two separate sections that stack into each other with a lid, this one retains its working lockable brass mechanism. The handles and upper lid are all carved from bamboo in low relief and are further decorated with brass engraved bosses and mounts. The lid has an especially nice relief carved and incised panel in a natural bamboo color that shows attendants and courtiers in a procession, however, the rest of the box is in the traditional red stained color most favored for these occasions. The handles and sides are all finely carved and incised and the finish is in excellent condition.
