English Victorian Bamboo Corner Étagère

About the Item

This lovely small étagère is part of a large type of export furniture made from the sea trade between east and west cultures in the 19th centuries, circa 1870. The structure is of imported bamboo decorated with sand burning to create an overall pattern crafted in the esthetical movement style and decorated sometimes with lacquer made for this purpose or sometimes with encaustic paper panels as in this piece. The embossed paper is impressed with designs then stiffened and steamed into a permanent pattern. It has been attached and painted to simulate leather. The top shelf has a superstructure of beveled mirror panels set in frames and for further decorative detail, all the end elements are capped with brass fittings and embossed rosettes.
