Chinese Four-Fold Screen with Cranes, Lotuses, Peonies, and Bamboo, 1963

About the Item

Chinese Four-Fold Screen with Cranes, Lotuses, Peonies, and Bamboo, 1963, "Creek Dwelling" Workshop Description: An authentic Chinese four-fold screen from the "Creek Dwelling" (溪居) workshop, created in 1963 during the early People’s Republic of China period, just before the Cultural Revolution. This intricate screen features a harmonious composition of red-crowned cranes, lotuses, peonies, blue magpies, bamboo, and a blue rock formation, symbolizing longevity, purity, prosperity, joy, resilience, and stability. Painted in the traditional bird-and-flower (huaniao) genre with exquisite ink and watercolor on paper, the screen showcases the artist’s skill in capturing nature’s beauty. The calligraphy, dated "End of Autumn, 1963," and the accompanying seals ("Creek Dwelling" and "Seal of Creek Dwelling") confirm its authenticity as an original work, with one panel bearing a 1952 reference, possibly indicating the artist’s birth year or a collector’s mark. Measuring H60.5cm x W124cm, its smaller size makes it ideal for a sophisticated interior, whether in a London townhouse or a Parisian apartment. Likely exported to a Western market such as Great Britain or France in the 1960s, this screen is a testament to the enduring appeal of Chinese decorative art, perfect for collectors and designers seeking a piece with historical depth and aesthetic elegance. Condition: Good, with minor wear consistent with age.
