About the Item

'Ronde' (Round) is a hinged four-panel screen covered with stretched paper on the front. The surface is hand-painted with mineral pigments and depicts a floral composition. Plants with long, slender stems bearing brightly coloured flowers (in reds and pinks) unfurl themselves against a creamy background sprinkled with flashes of gold. Butterflies flutter around this group of plants, contributing their lightness and beautiful colours to the impression of joy that emanates from this painting. A blue fabric is stretched over the wooden frame at the back of the screen. Gilded metal plaques, also featuring a floral motif, are positioned on the edges of the screen's frame. Each panel measures H 136 x W 52 x D 1.5 cm (H 53.5 x L 20.5 x D 0.6 in.). When the folding screen is fully opened, it measures H 136 x W 208 x D 1.5 cm (H 53.5 x L 81.9 x D 0.6 in.). CHEN Yiching (Taiwan, 1975), a specialist in Nihonga, a traditional form of Japanese painting, uses all the resources of this delicate aesthetic language to express her poetry and translate her perceptive, emotional experience of nature. Nihonga is a technique that originated in China during the Tang dynasty and had such an influence on Japanese art that, after numerous Japanese innovations in the 16th and 17th centuries, it became a traditional art form. Mastering this technique requires many years of practice and exceptional expertise in using natural pigments, mother-of-pearl, and gold and silver leaf. Since 2007, CHEN Yiching has lived and worked in Paris (France), where she runs Nihonga workshops at the Guimet Museum (Musée National des Arts Asiatiques-Guimet).
