Burmese Mandalay Seated Buddha, Red Lacquered, Gilt and Embellished, 19th c

About the Item

A gorgeous and serene Burmese carved teak wood figure of a seated Buddha, Mandalay style and of the period, late 19th century, Burma (Myanmar). This elegant Buddha is portrayed seated upon a short base in the full lotus position, the soles of his feet upturned, his hands performing bhumisparsha mudra, with one hand resting in his lap in mediation, the other draped gently over the knee, reaching down to touch this ground in front of him. This gesture is known as "Calling the Earth to Witness", and represents the moment the Buddha reaches enlightenment. The Buddha looks serenely outwards from shell inlaid eyes. His youthful face calm and untroubled, a small smile playing upon his full lips. His hair arranged in the typical tight "snail shell curls", and covering the pronounced ushnisha. The Buddha is dressed in diaphanous robes which hug his slender body. The hems of the robe elaborately decorated with sumptuously gilt and raised thayo lacquer scrollwork studded with colored glass "jewels". Crafted from carved and joined teak wood, the Buddha has been covered in orange red lacquer and was mostly likely fully gilt at one point. The gilding to the body mostly worn.
