About the Item

A delightful Shan Burmese cast bronze seated Buddha in the Ava style, late 19th or early 20th century, Burma. The Buddha sits upon a high, well cast double lotus pedestal. He is seated pitched forward in the full lotus position, the soles of his feet facing up. He holds one hand in his lap in meditation. The other is raised and heart level, performing shuni mudra, the gesture of patience. His face has a sweetness particular to Ava images. He gazes downwards from heavily lidded eyes under high arched brows. He has a small, broad nose over a wide mouth set in a beatific smile. The Buddha's face is framed by large ears with long earlobes that touch his shoulders. His hair is arranged in the typical neat rows of tight curls, covering the raised ushnisha to the top of his head. A lotus bud finial tops the ushnisha. The Buddha wears the simple robes of a monk wrapped around his body. One arm and part of the chest exposed. The double lotus pedestal is dramatic and well cast, with the petals crisp and distinct. The narrow waist adding to the dramatic effect. The bronze with an overall honey brown patina with remnants of black lacquer - especially to the lotus petals and the robed body.
