Han Dynasty Jade Bixie

About the Item

Han Dynasty Bixie, circa 206 BC to 220 AD, muscularly carved. The creature is depicted crouching on its powerful paws, its head thrown back, jaws open to reveal fangs, wings folded against its shoulders, and its horn touching its back. The so-called bixie, “evil-averter,” is one of the auspicious creatures figured in Han funerary art. The bixie—called chimera in the West—have the supple body of a feline combined with wings and horns. Bixie are typically represented in fierce stances, with their mouths open to show their teeth and slightly crouching, as if ready to pounce. The emphasis is put on their strength, menacing attitude, and compressed muscular energy. The opaque jade is of a light green hue with red and russet shades, covered almost entirely in ancient calcification.
