About the Item

A gorgeous pair of Chinese export famille rose enameled porcelain models of phoenixes, marked Jin Sheng Cheng, Republic Period (1911 - 1949), mid 20th century, China. The noble birds perch demurely upon openwork rocky bases populated by large sprays of peony, one leg extended, the other raised and grasping an outcrop. The birds themselves feature long and graceful proportions, with tall, skinny legs, elegant, slightly curved and turned necks, long, curled tail feathers, and stunning plumage in a wide range of famille rose colors. Their heads are turned to one side, with clout faces and beady eyes set against a blushy peach face framed by coral colored cockscombs and beards, and yellow beaks. They breasts glazed a beautiful deep shade pink. Soft famille rose enamels cover the rest of the birds. Their wing and tail feathers feature near pastel shades of pink, blue, and yellow. The feathers to the body of a subdued green. The neck feathers of lozenge shape and painted in a much brighter famille rose palette of pink, teal, blue, and yellow. Stamped to the underside with a four character marking reading "Jin Sheng Cheng Zuo". The Jin Sheng Cheng factory was a known and well regarded porcelain manufacturer producing famille rose enameled models of birds and other animals for export during the Republic Period (1911 - 1949).
