A Pair Vintage Folk Art Kokeshi Dolls Sakunami Style Signed Japan

About the Item

Vintage Kokeshi dolls from Japan. Sakunami Style. (作並系). Traditional. A married couple, man and wife. Completely handmade from Japanese Mizuki wood and painted, which is why there is only 1 of them. This technique is a craftsmanship that is passed down from master to apprentice. Signed on the bottom by the artist. Kokeshi dolls are a classic and traditional Japanese craft that started back in the Edo period (1804-1830) in Tohoku, Japan. The Kokeshi dolls were originally made as toys for children. The red color that often recurs on them was supposed to be a protection against bad luck and evil influence. They are therefore often used as gifts for babies and children, in the wish for a good upbringing. The kokeshi dolls symbolize friendship and love, and are a nice gift to give to a loved one.
