Japanese Kokeshi Wood Dolls, Signed, Pair
About the Item
A pair of authentic signed Japanese Kokeshi wood dolls, circa mid-20th century, Japan. Dolls shapes and patterns are particular to a certain area and are classified under eleven types, this doll is a Sakunami type, with provenance from northern Japan. Kokeshi dolls are handmade by Japanese artisans from wood. Dolls have a simple trunk design as a body and enlarged head. Another characteristic of Kokeshi doll is their lack of arms and legs. Dolls are painted by hand with lines to define the face, and the body with a floral or leaf motif, covered/protected with a very thin layer of wax. Authentication mark/artist signature on back and underside of each doll as shown in last two images. Matching set/one artist. Dimensions: 14.5" Height
