About the Item

A Very Rare and Large Bouddha , Lao 17th Century. Luang Prabang Style . Abhaya Mudra has its roots in ancient Indian spiritual traditions and is widespread in Buddhism and Hinduism. The term “abhaya” is derived from the Sanskrit words “a” (step) and “bhaya” (fear), collectively meaning “fearlessness” or “no fear”. This gesture is historically linked to the life of the Buddha and his teachings. According to Buddhist tradition, the Abhaya Mudra was first used by the Buddha when he encountered a charging elephant unloaded by his jealous cousin, Devadatta. By raising his hand in this gesture, the Buddha calmed the animal, demonstrating his serene power and the protective nature of his presence. This story sums up the essence of the Abhaya Mudra as a symbol of peace, protection and the dispelling of fear.
