About the Item

A rare Italian Art Deco ceramic chamberstick modelled as a clown and titled CIRCO ZAEO by La Societa Ceramica Richard Ginori and believed to date from around 1920. Possibly the work of acclaimed Italian artist and designer Giovanni ‘Gio’ Ponti (Italian, 1891-1979) who was collaborating and providing designs to Richard Ginori porcelain at this time. The chamberstick is of rounded form standing raised on a narrow round foot with the figure of a clown bursting through a cover and raising himself out by resting his arms on the rim, one raised bent arm forming the handle. The clowns head forms a candleholder, and the clown is in typical dress wearing a large round collar decorated with a star with a garment with puffed shoulders and striped sleeves. The figure is hand painted in bright colors and the words CIRCO ZAEO have been hand painted in black to the surface of the saucer shaped base. The base has a feint printed mark for La Societa Ceramica Richard Ginori in Milan. Provenance: from a private collection and acquired in the UK Art Market. Offered in good condition with some light age rubbing to the rim. A very rare example.
