This antique light fixture could not be more original and it even comes with a set of three near-transparent glass roses shades AND a set of three amberish color glass roses shades (matching the alabaster). So you can always choose the type of glass rose shades that you think are best for the occasion, season etc. The superb condition, colorful, extra large and deep alabaster shade combined with the equally excellent glass roses are a match made in heaven. However, what takes this chandelier to the next level are the three large and gilt bronze ram sculptures at each of the three suspension points. May these meaningful symbols for determination, power and leadership inspire their new owner(s) to reach for the stars and beyond. The black veins combined with other color veins and patches in this natural mineral stone shade contrast even more beautiful when the light is switched on, because the already marvelous colorful alabaster then turns into an even warmer spectacle of colors. We could shoot a hundred photos, but you still would not be able to see the true beauty of this impressive chandelier. The unique patterns inside this hand carved shade are the work of mother nature herself and the light brings them out in their true glory. In real life our antiques always have that little bit extra and this stunning pendant is all but an exception to that rule. You can, again, take our word for it. The original and heavy gilt bronze chain and the stunning and large, gilt bronze canopy are like the icing on the cake of this incredibly rich chandelier. If you have also noticed the double rose pattern on each of the gilt bronze shackles then you must agree that whomever had this chandelier made clearly spared no expenses. And to give you an even better idea of the quality, the gilt bronze canopy alone weighs over 11 pounds lbs.
To find this majestic chandelier in such excellent condition made our day, week and month and we are proud to be able to offer it to our 1stdibs clientele first. For our photos of this six-light chandelier we used three 75 watt bulbs inside the shade and one 60 watt bulb in each of the rose shades. When we find an antique that is this good in terms of its design AND in terms of the quality of the workmanship then the first thing we do is to look for a signature. And we were really (and pleasantly) surprised to find the signature of MJ Slager in the far right, bottom corner. Only once before have we seen and owned and sold another stunning antique by this highly skilled artist. And when you realize that there have never been any other pieces of this artist available on the internet anywhere (apart from the stunning folding screen that we sold via 1stdibs and that you can see in image 19 of this listing) then you will understand how special it was for us that this coat rack by MJ Slager too landed on our path. Thinking of the odds of this happening, we can only describe it as a blessing. Like we described in that previous listing: when you look at the beauty, the detail and the overal workmanship it is unbelievable that such a skilled artist did not go on and have a bigger career. As more often has been the case here in Holland, maybe the first world war had something to do with it.

Edmond Laurent Etling (23 June 1878 – around 1940) was a French art dealer, gallery owner, designer and a manufacturer of high-quality decorative objects made of bronze, ceramics and art glass in the Art Deco style.
His company La Societe Anonyme Edmond Etling, founded in Paris in 1909, manufactured decorative objects and commissioned sculptors and artists, including Georges Béal, Demétre Chiparus, Claire Colinet, Armand Godard, Geneviève Granger, Marcel Guillard, Maurice Guiraud-Rivière, Géza Hiecz, Fanny Rozet, and Lucille Sévin. Other artists that worked with Etling for casting their statuettes included Aurore Onu, Marcel Bouraine, Pierre Le Faguays, Raymonde Guerbe and André Vincent Becquerel.
Etling is known for light blue opalescent objects such as plates and bowls, which were also produced in gray and frosted glass. Most items bore the cast signature "Etling France" followed by a model number related to the Choisy-le-Roi catalogue. In 1910, Etling was awarded the diplome d'honneur at Brussels International (1910). In 1923, he was awarded the Grand Prix in Paris. In 1940, Etling closed his shop due to World War II. Because Etling was of Jewish descent, he was sent to a Nazi concentration camp, where he died.

These two impressive bull elephants on the other hand come with tremendous physical details and whomever hand carved this pair must have studied these majestic creatures for a long time. Besides that, he or she must have been a seasoned sculptor/wood-carver, because it takes a special kind of talent to reach this level of craftsmanship. We have searched the worldwide web and there is not a single wooden elephant sculpture out there that even comes close to having the same quality details and/or such perfect anotomy. It does not take a biologist to see that the artist has perfectly captured the soul of these ancient herbivors and therefor too they have great aesthetic and decorative value. Some of the amazing details of these sizable tuskers are their dried-leather-like skins. You just don't find carved elephants like that, because besides being extremely time consuming, it also takes great skill. Other great features/details are the loose skin around the hips and around the 'armpits', the trunks and mouths, the amazing body postures and ofcourse the stunning ears. They too are unlike anything we ever saw in an elephant sculpture. That too is why it did not take 30 seconds for us to know we had to have these in our gallery on 1stdibs (now also home to the most beautiful elephants on earth). Besides being more realistic than any wooden elephant we have seen or sold before, this pair also is fairly large in size. And with them being carved out of solid teakwood they have quite a bit of weight to them as well. Previous owners have clearly taken very, very good care of these midcentury carved elephants which is why they could not be in better condition either.
