About the Item
Black Forest Linden wood naturalistically carved strolling bear with original glass eyes, crafted in Brienz. This exquisitely carved lindenwood piece features realistic details. An excellent illustration of the well-known Swiss Black Forest Woodcarvings. In Brienz, wood carving has a long history that began in the middle of the 1800s. Individuals in the area were searching for new job prospects. They carved sculptures and common goods using their traditional craft skills and created a new business. The "School of Wood Carving, Brienz" was founded in 1884 and served as a training ground for many woodcarvers. By 1900, there were over 2000 woodcarvers in the woodcarving industry. Brienz woodcarvings were successfully displayed at many international exhibitions.
