About the Item

With its unique kintsugi style repair, this Wedgwood black basalt vase has become one of a kind. The flared trumpet style vase was made by Wedgwood in the first half of the 20th century, circa 1930 and depicts classical figures in relief around the exterior of the vase. The pedestal style foot is marked to the underside for manufacture by Wedgwood in England and certainly references the 18th and 19th century pieces of black basalt Wedgwood made under the direction of Josiah Wedgwood. This vase has been broken at some stage in its life and repaired in the Japanese kintsugi style. Kintsugi is the method of repairing cracked or broken ceramics with lacquer and gold leaf, highlighting the imperfection as not being a defect, rather an addition to its beauty. Unfortunately, whilst beautiful, this vase is no longer watertight and is purely decorative. Despite its lack of functionality, the unique and highly unusual repair has resulted in something greater than the object was prior to its breakage. A really beautiful piece for a collector of neoclassical Wedgwood, or an equally delightful addition to a mantelpiece for a lover of beautiful objects.
