Handsome Scandinavian Modern staved teak ice bucket designed by Jens Quistgaard for Dansk Designs. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that this is vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear. Please see photos and zoom in for details. We attempt to portray any imperfections. circa, 1960s. The undeniable beauty of this stunning Scandinavian Modern piece is no “drop in the bucket!” This lower style lidded ice container was designed by the famed Jens Quistgaard for Dansk Designs. Not sure whether we should call this an ice bucket, ice bowl, or ice container but we do know to call it awesome!! It is comprised of a staved teak slightly tapered round body with self-bands somewhat reminiscent of an old oak bucket. The teak lid has a bullseye effect with its integral teak handle. It is going to be beautiful blended in with the other items on the bar or rolling bar cart, in the kitchen at the breakfast nook, or on the buffet in the dining area. And in case you don’t necessarily NEED another ice bucket, here’s a little secret my mom had one exactly like this that she used as a cookie jar!! It has multiple uses and an incredible Scandinavian Modern flair! Jens Harald Quistgaard was an outstanding and prolific designer. Born April 23, 1919, and raised in Copenhagen he showed his talent early creating a workshop in his mother’s kitchen. He was trained in sculpture by his father, Harald Quistgaard, but furthered his artistic education at the technical school in Copenhagen. He designed for many different companies early in his career, but his big break came when he met Martha and Ted Nierenberg the founders of Dansk Designs. Jens helped them to create Dansk and became their primary and chief designer. He remained in that position designing hundreds of items, even the Nierenberg’s home, until the early 1980s when he moved to Rome. He returned to Denmark around 1992 a renowned and award-winning designer continuing to work until just prior to his death in 2008. Dansk Designs, contrary to popular belief, is an American company not Danish. Founded in 1954 by Martha and Ted Nierenberg who traveled to Europe in search of new products to bring to the U.S. post war audience who was ready for a change from the formal lives they had been living and ready to embrace a more modern and simple way. The Scandinavian Modern Designs fit that bill perfectly. And the Nierenbergs engaged Jens Harald Quistgaard to help them accomplish this task. And that they did. It’s been said that Ted and Jens made one good Industrial designer. Jens with his beautiful designs and Ted with knowing how they had to be made to be affordable. Dansk Designs was purchased in 1985 by Dansk Acquisition Corp initiated by Goldman Sachs. Then in 1991 it was purchased by Brown-Forman Corporation’s Lenox division. 2009 brought the most recent change when it was all purchased and renamed Lenox Corporation. Currently Dansk operates as a brand of Lenox and still makes beautiful wares. But it is its vintage pieces which are most sought after today. This is a fabulous teak ice bucket by Jens Quistgaard for Dansk Designs. Don’t you LOVE it? Of course, you do! So, don’t wait to make it YOURS!!!! It is EXACTLY what the party ordered! George Briard is a nom de plume for designer and artist Jascha Brojdo who was born May 17, 1917, in Poland. He was born Jakub Brojdo but changed his name to Jascha upon moving to Chicago in 1937 where he attended the Art Institute of Chicago and earned his MFA. During WWII he served on General George S. Patton’s staff as an interpreter. He ended up in New York after his discharge from the Army and began working with a friend, Max Willie, from art school. It was Willie who suggested the name George Briard for his hand painted serving trays he began making and selling, and who first produced his commercial products. After painting trays for a time, he moved on to buying glassware blanks from Libbey and Anchor Hocking and embellishing them with his designs, most times in 22-karot gold. He soon learned he could license his name to those companies as well as other companies to create his designs for him. His creations became highly popular through the 1950s to 1970s. During those years you could find his name on everything from glass, to ceramic, metal, or wood and on trays, coffee pots, dishes, and more. They were offered for sale in high end department stores such as Neiman Marcus and Bonwit Teller. In 2004 he was awarded the Frank S. Child Lifetime Achievement Award by The Society of Glass and Ceramic Decorators. George or rather Jascha or maybe it’s Jakub passed away a year later in New York at the age of 88. His work has become sought after by collectors and his nom de plume has become a mid-century Icon. The cocktail hour will never be the same once you own a vintage George Briard ice bucket...
