Stunning identical Pair of English heavy gauge Sterling Silver mounted full led Crystal Spirits or Wine Decanters, made by renowned silversmiths Roberts and Dore of Hatton Garden London, England. The unusual square body outline richly hand cut with scrolling and stylized foliage and flowers. Complete with their original firm fitting decorative bulbous stoppers, star cut pattern underneath each base. Condition: Good condition for such early pieces. No inside clouding, wonderful evidence of age wear at base underneath. No losses to silver. Makers Mark: R & D for Roberts and Dore. Hallmark for London 1966. Height: 11.25” (28.5cm). Roberts & Doré is well known for its production of silver, sterling silver and electroplate commodities from the early 20th Century to contemporary times. Roberts & Doré was founded by Thomas Roberts and James Doré in Sheffield in 1908. In 1912 the company was transferred to Hatton Gardens. Another company; a subsidiary of Roberts & Doré was listed in 1912 in Sheffield as Roberts, Dore & Hall (Sheffield) Ltd. The firm Roberts & Doré Ltd was registered in 1914 in Hatton Gardens, London. Three generations of the Roberts family have worked at Roberts & Doré. Thomas Roberts’ son Trevor Roberts joined in 1926. Trevor’s children, Henry and Kim Roberts joined in 1958 and 1968 respectively. A magnificent, fine and impressive pair of antique Georgian English sterling silver wine coolers made by Paul Storr; an addition to our antique wine and drink related silverware collection These magnificent antique George III sterling silver wine coolers have a classic campania shaped form onto a plain knopped pedestal and domed circular spreading foot. The surface of the upper portion of each body is plain and embellished with two large applied tied oak leaf wreath cartouches, one side bears the contemporary bright cut engraved coat of arms* depicting a pile engrailed with three cross-crosslet fitchy, all surmounted with the crest displaying a cock's head. The second cartouche on each holder bears the contemporary bright cut engraved presentation inscription 'Given to William Rigden, In Remembrance of William Galdork, by W.H.B'. These silver wine bottle holders each have an applied moulded decorated border to the flared rim. The lower bulbous portion of each wine cooler is encompassed with exceptional chased fluted decoration below an applied ribbed border. Each wine cooler is supported by a domed circular spreading foot embellished with a chased egg decorated border and a plain collet style rim. This exceptional pair of Georgian wine coolers were crafted by the renowned and important London silversmith Paul Storr. * This coat of arms pertains to the Rigden/Rigdon family.
