"Dragon Compotes, " Mid-Century Chinese-Inspired Centerpieces, Glass & Resin

About the Item

This pair of stunning and unique compotes, composed of glass with resin bases and lids, was designed by Dorothy Thorpe, one of the most prolific and important women designers in Mid-Century America. Each compote vessel is set into a base that features a series of figures in bas relief from the Chinese zodiac, including a rooster, rabbit and snake, and each is crowned with a dragon, of course another important zodiac symbol that figured prominently in Chinese decorative arts over the centuries. Based in Los Angeles, Thorpe designed sets of glassware, for which she is best known, but also designed pieces executed in resin. This pair of compotes is the only example we have ever seen. The underside of each lid features Thorpe's monogram.
