About the Item

A stunning Aesthetic Movement William Brownfield plate with a stylised panel and floral design by Christopher Dresser (British, 1834-1904) dating from around 1876. Christopher Dresser was a renowned and influential designer born in Glasgow in 1834. In 1876 he was appointed as an emissary to Japan following many years prior to this travelling in Japan returning with inspiration which made him a huge influence on the Aesthetic Movement and bringing Anglo-Japanese styles to ceramic design. He is considered as one of the most influential ceramic designers of any period. This stylish rounded plate is heavily made the front printed and hand coloured with a design combining scrolling line and Gothic style borders with floral designs in between. The design in printed and over painted in subdued and contrasting bold colors with a brown painted rim around the edge of the plate. The plate has an impressed BROWNFIELD mark to the base along with a pattern number 8755 and a further printed ‘No 26’ mark to the edge.
