About the Item

Antique round butter pats feature 6 different floral decors; one decor is repeated, but in the different colorway. The outlines of the decors were transferred on the porcelain blanks by decals and hand-painted over the lines by hand. Raised enamel accents were used as an additional decorative element, and the rims were outlined with gold lines. Minimal, reserved palette of the decor matches the soft, delicate cottage garden flowers, with bright, crisp white color of porcelain acting as a perfect background for the elegant decoration. The bottoms of the pats were left unglazed, or "bisque", indicating that the pats can be used in the oven as individual dishes for serving small portions of hot foods; in modern tablescape the pats can be used not only for butter, but also for sauces or dips. The butter pats are marked with CFH mark that dates them to 1868-1875, and CFH/GDM mark, that dates them to 1882-1890; multiple pats are also marked with the decorator mark, "CH. Filed Haviland Limoges", or so called "donut mark" that was in use from 1862 to present. Overall, the marks are dating the set to 1868-1890, with porcelain blanks probably made around 1870s-1880s, and the set being decorated in early 1880s. It was rather common practice to omit the use of both manufacturer and decorator mark on small items, as happened with this set. The pats are in good antique condition with some age-appropriate loss of gold on the rims.

Haviland Limoges Hand Painted Art Deco Porcelain Plates Water Lilies
By Haviland & Co.
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Set of 4 unique, antique plates was made by Haviland & Cie in Limoges, France. The plates were hand painted by a professional artist in a decorating studio with Art Deco motif of five water lilies on pale blue background. Calm blue and green colors are accentuated by bright yellow centers of the flowers and the gold rims. The advent of Arts and Craft Movement created the notion that the aesthetic quality of everyday utilitarian objects could be improved by merit of craftsmanship, and many painters and artists felt inspired to merge their activities into decorative arts, such as ceramics, decor objects, or dinnerware. Large number of wholesale and retail firms, such as Pickard, Stouffer, or Brauer studios, and many high-end department stores that carried factory decorated Limoges's porcelain, had their own china decorating departments and produced high quality hand painted porcelain. Undecorated Haviland china...
