Late 19th century Painted KPM porcelain plaque by Dittrich, after Landelle. German, late 19th century Frame: Height 52cm, width 37.5cm, depth 4cm Plaque: Height 43cm, width 28cm, depth 0.5cm This rectangular shaped porcelain plaque depicts the Old Testament Biblical figure Ruth in a cornfield. She is dressed plainly in a grey shift, white headscarf, and carrying a wheatsheaf under her left arm. She holds a direct gaze with the viewer, and stands in front of a subdued sunrise or sunset in the background. The original painting, by Charles Landelle (1821-1908), was painted in 1886 and is held in the Shipley Art Gallery in Gateshead. Landelle was a French painter, best known for his Orientalist works. The plaque is signed to the lower right 'R. Dittrich'. Dittrich was a famous china painter working in Austria and Germany during the 19th Century, and specialised in copies of Ruth in the Cornfield. The plaque is also inscribed to the reverse with the title and KPM marks, and is held in a giltwood frame.

This beautiful antique porcelain plaque exhibits the fine quality of craftsmanship and artistry that the prestigious Berlin porcelain manufactory, KPM, is renowned for. The plaque is delicately painted with the full-length portrait of Duchess Louise of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1776-1810), Queen of Prussia and wife of King William III (1770-1840). Louise was a popular Queen and was respected for her successful negotiations with Napoleon, before he became Emperor of France. In this plaque, she is depicted descending the steps of the Charlottenburg Palace, Berlin, which was the seat of the Prussian monarchy.
