Meissen Most Remarkable Figurine Figurine Group: The Three Fates Model 33 Size: height: 14.96 inches (= 38.0 cm) depth: 5.90 inches (= 15.0 cm) width: 12.59 inches (= 32.0 cm) Manufactory: Meissen Hallmarked: Blue Meissen Sword Mark model number 33 former's number 50 First quality Dating: second half of 19th century, circa 1880 Material: porcelain, glossy finish, multicolored painted Technique: handmade porcelain Style: Rococo modelled by: JOHANN JOACHIM KAENDLER (1706-1775) modelled 1774 Since 1731 modeller at Meissen Manufactory, Kaendler is the most famous sculptor having ever been active on behalf of Meissen. - This huge group of the Three Fates belongs to a type of figurine groups made by the Meissen manufactory on behalf of Tsarina / Czarina Katharina the Great of Russia (1729 - 1796), manufactured as from the year 1772 when Kaendler and Acier had received these most important orders. Detailed description: Centre of this pyramidal figurine group of triangular form type are the Three Goddesses of Fate - deriving from the Greek mythology: Clotho, Lachesis (spinning the Human Threads of Life) and Atropos (cutting through these threads). -- Clotho is situated at top of rock, seizing the distaff like a sceptre / a little cherub presents to her the required wool -- Lachesis, having sat down at left side, holds the spindle with thread -- Atropos lies on foreground - at right side - / she is prevented from cutting Thread of Life -- by the bearded as well as winged Chronos - the Greek God of Time - being situated behind her: Chronos seizes the scissors, pulling Atropos' hair ... It is known by bibliography that subject matter of this group had been chosen in order to wish Tsarina / Czarina Katharina the Great a long life (= Kaendler's work report of June 1774).
