Pair of Early 19th Century Spode Blue and White "Pagoda" Stone China Bowls, 1825

About the Item

Pair of Early 19th Century Spode Blue and White "Pagoda" Stone China Bowls, England, Circa 1825 A finely preserved pair of early 19th-century English transferware bowls by Spode, decorated in the richly detailed “Pagoda” pattern—a quintessential example of British chinoiserie design. Made around 1825–1835, these bowls are crafted in Spode’s durable stone china body, a high-fired ceramic developed to rival imported Chinese porcelain. Each 9.5-inch diameter bowl features an intricate cobalt blue transfer design depicting a stylized Chinese landscape: multi-tiered pagodas, rocky mountains, pines, and island dwellings surrounded by water, all rendered with a romantic, imaginative flair. The composition is enclosed within a complex butterfly and floral border, finished with a delicate hand-applied gilt rim (now softly worn with age). The reverse bears an early Spode blue printed seal mark reading “Spode / Stone China,” along with a hand-painted red pattern number (likely 1822/4), used by the factory decorators to identify pattern and variation. These marks confirm production during the firm's Regency and early Victorian period, when Spode was at the forefront of English ceramics innovation. A rare matched pair in excellent antique condition, these bowls are ideal for collectors of English blue and white, chinoiserie interiors, or early Spode stone china. Dimensions: 9.5 in. diameter x approx. 1.75 in. high Condition: Excellent antique condition with minor wear to gilding, commensurate with age. No chips or repairs.
