About the Item

A Rare 18th Century Meissen Porcelain Marcolini Period Watteau Covered Potpourri. This rare Meissen porcelain potpourri vase, dating from the Marcolini period (1774–1814), exemplifies the refined neoclassical aesthetic of late 18th-century European porcelain. The vase features an ovoid body raised on an architectural openwork pedestal, adorned with hand-painted Watteau-style pastoral scenes depicting elegantly dressed figures in a lush countryside. The delicately painted landscapes, executed in soft enamels, reflect the influence of French Rococo art, particularly the fête galante compositions of Antoine Watteau. The pierced cover is surmounted by a gilt loop handle, allowing fragrance to diffuse when in use. Gilt accents and blue floral embellishments further enhance the finely modeled porcelain. A distinctive feature of this potpourri vase is the pair of figural mask handles, sculpted as classical female busts draped in cobalt-blue veils with gilded details. The base is decorated with applied gilt garlands and a simulated basketweave panel, harmonizing with the overall neoclassical design. The restrained use of gilding, combined with the precision of the hand-painted decorations, underscores the quality of Meissen craftsmanship during this period. The bottom is marked with a Meissen underglaze blue-crossed swords mark with Marcolini Asterisk mark and double dots. The Meissen Porcelain Manufactory, established in 1710, was Europe’s first hard-paste porcelain producer, pioneering techniques that rivaled Chinese and Japanese imports. Under the directorship of Count Camillo Marcolini (1774–1814), Meissen embraced neoclassicism, influenced by contemporary French and Italian trends. Pieces from this era are particularly rare, as production numbers were lower compared to earlier periods. The survival of this delicate potpourri vase in such remarkable condition is extraordinary, making it a significant example of late 18th-century Meissen porcelain. Germany, Circa: 1775
